We work closely with our global men's health partners to ensure collaboration, transparency and accountability for every project we fund. We monitor this through report cards which detail what we seek to achieve, key measures and the impact.
Prostate Cancer

About the project

Movember Ahead of the Game (MAOTG) is a youth mental health programme harnessing the power of sport to engage young men. The MAOTG programme teaches young men aged 12-18 years, their support networks of parents and sports coaches to understand mental health, build mental fitness and strengthen resilience. Young men learn how to deal with challenges in both sport and life.

Through Movember funded research, the programme was developed, piloted and evaluated in partnership with the University of Wollongong in Australia during 2014-2017. This was part of Movember's 'Go to Where Men Are' strategy.   

Research on the programme has shown improvements in the mental wellbeing of young men as well as significant changes in the knowledge, attitudes and behavioural intentions that underpin prevention and early intervention of mental ill-health. 

Following the establishment of the programme's evidence-base, Movember developed a strategy to scale MAOTG in sporting communities across Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. 

Since 2018, the programme has been scaled via a staged approach and unique implementation and partnership model.  

To date, partners such as the Australian Football League in Australia, Greater Toronto Hockey League in Canada, New Zealand Rugby, Rugby League Cares and Scottish Action for Mental Health in the United Kingdom, have been important in amplifying the reach and implementation of the programme. 

In late 2023, programme delivery in Ireland kicked off in partnership with Gaelic Athletics Association (GAA) and the Gaelic Players Association (GPA). In the first year of delivery,  176 clubs across the 32 counties of Ireland  took part in MAOTG, and we're just getting started as part of our multi-year partnership!

Movember funding has and continues to be instrumental for delivering real-world impact for young men aged 12-18 years and their support networks.   To date, over 50,000 young people and their support networks have taken part in Movember Ahead of the Game across the globe, with a current strategy to engage 250,000 participants across Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and the United Kingdom by the end of 2027.
