Mental health and suicide prevention

TRIGGER WARNING PLEASE NOTE - THIS POST CONTAINS MENTION OF A TOPIC SOME PEOPLE MAY FIND UPSETTING
My father died by suicide in April 2019, and when I was told the news my world changed in an instant and forever. I am not ashamed to admit it broke me completely and for a time I was utterly bereft of hope and inconsolable with grief. It is really only now 5 years on, with the support of my friends and loved ones that I can write these words.

I consider myself extremely fortunate to have had him as my dad, as he was the kindest and most gentle man I have ever known and he was always there when I needed him as a source of support and advice. He was my constant rock against the storms of life and a true role model to me on how to live a good life. Sure he could be infuriating at times, as can we all and we had our minor disagreements, yet much as it pains me still to admit it, he was usually right (but I still maintain that parsnips are vile things and have no place being part of a roast dinner - sorry Dad lol )

There is still never a day that goes by without me thinking of him and wishing desperately that I could just pick up the phone and just shoot the breeze with him again or go to the pub and have a pint or two and a chat. Unfortunately much as I would love that to be the case, that can never happen again as death completely severs the day-to-day connection we have with those that we love. We can take some hope however in the fact, that as long as we remember them and tell their stories those that have gone before can still live on with us and serve as a daily inspiration to thrive and do good in the world.

My dad was always clean shaven and chuckled kindly at my adolescent attempts to cultivate a moustache or beard, and even indulged me when I came home one day having decided it would be cool to smoke a pipe (kids I have to state it was not cool then and isn't cool now - I looked utterly ridiculous)

I hope by growing a tache once again, now I am able to do so more successfully, I know I will probably look ridiculous but will be able to raise funds that can be used to get people comfortable talking about their mental health before it is too late to do so. Be well and be kind to yourself and one another.

Movember is the leading charity changing the face of men's health, and this Movember I'm joining them. Together we can make a difference for men's health – in prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. Help me stop men dying too young.

I didn’t know Matt, that you had lost your Dad, I am sorry. Keep on doing what you do Matt, I am not a spiritual person myself, but, of course I could be wrong and if I am your Dad will be very proud of you.
